Many people in Johannesburg thought they finally had a good job with the metro police. They went through all the steps: physical tests, psychometric tests, and home visits to check their addresses. They were told they would start training in January 2025. But then the process stopped.

The problem is that the Johannesburg Metro Police Department found that at least 52 of the 500 new recruits got their positions through corruption. As a result, the whole recruitment was cancelled. Over 400 people, including Wenele Mashile, are now left without jobs.

Mashile quit his job as a petrol attendant in December after being told he was accepted. He has a child to support and now has to look for work again. He says, “I thought this was my big break. Now I’m struggling a lot.”

Other applicants feel the same. Gosiame Khumalo, a criminology student, says she was ready to start her career. “They even came to our homes to verify our addresses. We thought it was the final step. Then they went quiet.” She has cried many times and says the situation is heartbreaking.

Goldwin Chauke, another applicant, worked part-time as an invigilator and saw this as his big chance. He says many people resigned from their jobs or stopped studying because they believed they would start at the academy in January. “Emotionally and physically, we are damaged. Unemployment is already high, so our hopes were very high.”

The group went to court to try to stop the city from re-advertising the jobs. But the court said their case was not urgent and had mistakes in the papers. A lawyer for the city explained that the applicants never received official appointment letters, so they cannot claim they had jobs. The city says it must restart the process because of the corruption.

The applicants are now waiting for new dates to be reconsidered first when the posts are advertised again. Until then, they must find other ways to survive.
