Johannesburg Waste Pickup Delays as Workers Protest for Permanent Jobs
Waste collection in Johannesburg has been disrupted. Casual workers who work for Pikitup's service providers are protesting. They want Pikitup to give them permanent jobs instead of casual work.
On Thursday, these workers stopped working. This affected trash collection at all Pikitup depots. Pikitup spokesperson Anthony Selepe said that because of the protest, waste collection might not happen on time in many areas.
This is making the existing backlog worse. There was already a backlog after protests against illegal immigration on June 30. Now, more areas may not get their trash collected.
Pikitup apologizes to residents. They say they will work to fix the problem as soon as they can. They are trying to reduce the impact and restore services.
They ask residents to be patient while the dispute is resolved. Pikitup is committed to getting back to normal service as quickly as possible.
